CALLING ALL ATHLETES - SUMMER RACES IN CARINTHIA
Carinthian sunshine and the famous lakes and mountains of the region makes it a great destination to host summer sporting events. Every year, athletes from around the world come to Carinthia to show off their skills in summer races. Are you up for the challenge? Runners, swimmers, mountain bikers, and all sport loving young people are invited to compete. Even if you are not an athletic person, it is still fun to attend these sporting events as a spectator to cheer on the competition. So get ready to train and join one of these summer races in Carinthia!
UNITED WORLD GAMES - JUNE
The United World Games is one of the largest youth sporting events in the world and takes place every year in Klagenfurt. Each year during the month of June, delegations of young athletes from around the world compete in different sporting events. Since 2005, the United World Games provides young people with an opportunity to showcase their passion for sports as well as build international friendships. In 2018, 40 countries were represented with more than 10,000 youth athletes.
IRON MAN AUSTRIA - JULY
The Iron Man Austria triathlon has been described as one of the most beautiful races in the world. Every year, more than 3,000 athletes from over 60 countries compete in Klagenfurt for the Iron Man Austria race. The triathlon consists of a series of long-distance races including a 3.86-kilometer swim in the beautiful Lake Wörthersee, a 180.25-kilometer bike ride, and a marathon 42.20-kilometer run around the lake. If that doesn’t sound like an athletic feat, consider that all of this must be completed without a break. Think you have what it takes? Register for the Iron Man Austria triathlon that takes place every July.
NASSFELD MOUNTAIN BIKE PEAK - JULY
At the beginning of July, the Nassfeld resort area is all about mountain biking during the Nassfeld Mountain Bike Peak Race weekend. This fun mountain bike program includes music, shows, and delicious culinary events in the beautiful Nassfeld mountain area. Friday and Saturday host bike races for families and youth with the Nassfeld Rad Classic, Family Cycle Tour Day, and the Junior Mountain Bike Challenges. Sunday is the big race day with the Austrian Mountain Bike Hillclimb Championships. In 2019, there is even more to celebrate with the opening of the new Nassfeld Flow Bike trails.
GROSSGLOCKNER BERGLAUF & BIKE CHALLENGE - JULY
Are you in search of an athletic challenge? Join the Grossglockner Mountain Run & Bike Challenge to show Austria what you are made of. During the month of July, mountaineers compete in the Alpine terrain of Höhe Tauern National Park to show their skills. The route is 12,67 kilometers long with a total elevation gain of about 1.494 meters, making the Grossglockner Mountain run comparable to the rigor of a half marathon in the mountains. If you’re in search of even more of a challenge, join the “duathlon” with the Grossglockner Bike Challenge. The Grossglockner Bike Challenge takes place the day before the Grossglockner Mountain Run and leads from Heiligenblut via the Grossglockner High Alpine Road to the Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe
KÄRNTEN LÄUFT - AUGUST
In August, the Kärnten läuft (Carinthia Runs) sporting event takes place around the Lake Wörthersee. For three days, there are different races suitable for people of all levels - even dogs can race. The highlight of the event is the half-marathon on Sunday. So dust off your running shoes and consider joining one of the fun races during Kärnten läuft. The race is called Carinthia Runs after all!
