VILLACH’S SISTER CITIES – FRIENDSHIPS BEYOND BORDERS
Villach is distinguished not only by its beautiful location at the tripoint of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia but also by its international connections. With five official sister cities across Europe, Villach promotes cultural, economic, and personal exchange in various ways. These partnerships contribute to the city’s international character and open-minded spirit.
1. BAMBERG – A HISTORIC CONNECTION
Villach’s oldest sister city partnership is with Bamberg in Germany, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Formally sealed in 1973, the history of this relationship dates back to 1007 when Villach became part of Bamberg’s holdings. Today, both cities are closely connected through their relaxed lifestyle and cultural exchange.
2. KRANJ – BRIDGING TO SLOVENIA
The Slovenian city of Kranj is Villach’s closest sister city and symbolizes the long-standing connection between Carinthia and Slovenia. Kranj and Villach have been closely linked since the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Since 2008, Villach and Kranj have promoted exchange in culture, sports, and tourism. Kranj’s old town, with its medieval architecture, is a popular tourist destination, reminding visitors of the region’s shared history.
3. SURESNES – FRIENDSHIP ACROSS THE ALPS
Suresnes in France, a suburb of Paris, shares a special history with Villach. The partnership was officially sealed in 1992 but traces back to the friendship of the then mayor of Suresnes, Robert Pontillon, who was a prisoner of war in Carinthia during World War II. This deeply rooted relationship symbolizes reconciliation and cooperation for a united Europe.
4. TOLMIN – A FRIENDSHIP THAT TRANSCENDS BORDERS
The youngest partnership is with Tolmin in Slovenia, officially sealed in 2014 and ceremoniously renewed in 2024. However, the two cities have maintained close ties since 2010, particularly in youth, sports, and fire services. This partnership highlights how long-lasting connections can arise from personal encounters. Tolmin, known for its spectacular nature and outdoor activities, is a popular destination for sports enthusiasts and culture lovers.
5. UDINE – CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC BRIDGES TO ITALY
Since 1979, the partnership with the Italian city of Udine has existed, reflecting the close geographical and cultural proximity the two cities have shared for centuries. Villach and Udine, located at the endpoints of important transport routes, promote exchanges on many levels, from the economy to culture, strengthening the ties between Austria and Italy.
These sister city partnerships make Villach an international hub of exchange, friendship, and cooperation – a city that shines through its connections to the world while maintaining its local identity.
