© RVT | Adrian Hipp

After all of the activities of the holiday season, you deserve some much-needed relaxation. Now that the new year is upon us, its the perfect opportunity to release stress and start anew. During the winter months, it is especially important to take care of yourself. Since the days are colder and darker, our bodies need extra attention to ward off winter illness. If you’re looking to relax this winter you’re in luck. Villach has plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy a moment of peace ranging from classes on meditation to healing thermal pools. With our tips, you’re sure to have a relaxing winter.

UNPLUG IN NATURE

No matter where you are, it seems like everyone around us is playing with a smartphone. Research now shows that the average person spends 2 -3 hours on a smartphone each day. While not much is known about how damaging smartphones can be to our health, everyone deserves the opportunity to “unplug” sometimes. Winter is a great opportunity to leave social media behind and enjoy time in nature. For those interested in taking a break from technology, the Naturpark Dobratsch is offering “Unplugged Nature Walks” every Friday until March 1st, 2019. Enjoy a guided evening walk to Hundsmarhof where old-fashioned lanterns illuminate the way. After all, a social media post never captures the magic of experiencing a winter landscape in person.

LEARN YOGA

If you’ve always wanted to give yoga a try, make 2019 the year to do it. This ancient practice not only helps improve your physique but may also benefit your mind and spirit. The best way to start practicing yoga is to attend a class with an instructor. It's important that you learn how to do the poses correctly so you don’t hurt yourself. In Villach, there are several studios for you to learn yoga such as Yoga VillachBe YogaYogasoul, and Yoga in Everyday Life. All of the studios in Villach offer a range of courses from beginner to professional so there’s something for everyone. See you on the mat!

RELAX IN THE THERMAL WATERS OF WARMBAD-VILLACH

Since Roman times, the thermal waters of Warmbad-Villach have been famous for their healing properties. At the modern KärntenTherme, there are two floors of water activities for you to enjoy. For more peace and relaxation, try the thermal spring pool at the Hotel Warmbaderhof. The “thermal urquellbecken” pool is built directly above a thermal spring so you can enjoy the healing properties of the water directly from the source. When weather permits, it is also possible to enjoy the Maibachl free of charge. This unique thermal pool is located in the woods and is perfect for nature-lovers.

WARM-UP WITH A CUP OF TEA

During the cold winter months, there’s nothing better than relaxing with a cup of hot tea. Not only does drinking tea provide warmth, but it can also do wonders for your health and wellbeing. Research has shown that herbal teas may reduce inflammation and relieve stress and anxiety. If you’re feeling unmotivated this winter, try incorporating herbal tea into your routine with the help of the Teapot Teehaus in Villach. The Teapot’s owner Daniela Koppitsch is passionate about tea and can help you find the perfect tea blend for your tastes and needs.

PRACTICE MINDFULNESS

Traditionally, winter is a time of slowing down and turning inwards. For many people, the start of the new year is a time for setting intentions and making resolutions. If you are feeling burnt out, consider introducing a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is about being fully present in your life without feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of the world around you. Mindfulness uses meditation and breathing techniques to help promote inner peace and balance. In January 2019, the Kärntner Volkshochschulen will be offering two courses on mindfulness at locations throughout Carinthia. All courses will be taught in German, so if you are still learning the language consider one of the many free mindfulness apps available for download.
